There are nine Espers to unlock. Siren arrives through the Chapter 1 story; the other eight require optional exploration or quests. Fina calls an acquired Esper into battle, with one summon present at a time for three turns.
The route table covers the full game and contains location and chapter spoilers. A rumor can appear before its reward is reachable, so finding a clue does not always mean you can finish the unlock immediately.
Unlock order and prerequisites
| First available chapter | Esper | Required route or access |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Siren | Follow the main story at Siren's Tower. |
| 2 | Ramuh | Investigate the rumor in Dilmagia and return to Mt. Thunderclap's trial route. |
| 3 | Carbuncle | Find three Ruby Fragments around Olderion and return them at Ruby Cave. |
| 4 | Titan | Win the Gaia Hammer from Fledgling Battle 5 at the reopened Colosseum, then break the desert seal. |
| 5 | Ifrit | Use the airship to reach the volcano in Zoldaad. |
| 5 | Leviathan | Complete Nichol's Duty, starting in Olderion. |
| 5 | Shiva | Reach the island southwest of Mysidia and accept the trial. |
| 6 | Odin | Complete the Iron Splitter quest chain. |
| 7 | Bahamut | After the airship scene about the Esper Lord of the Heavens, speak with Evan. |
The chapter order and unlock conditions agree between the full-game route guide and the launch-day location overview. Recommended character levels in individual guides are preparation advice, not additional recruitment requirements.

The tutorial distinguishes acquiring an Esper from calling it into battle.
Siren and Ramuh
Siren arrives through Chapter 1
Continue the story to Siren's Tower and finish its main-story sequence. Siren becomes your first Esper. This is the story unlock that introduces the system; you do not need to locate a separate optional rumor first.
Afterward, an NPC near Grandport Harbor's inn can point you toward the desert Esper. Keep that clue for later: Titan's seal requires an item obtained after the Colosseum reopens in Chapter 4.
Ramuh's route loops back to Mt. Thunderclap
- In Dilmagia, speak with the girl near the right side of the entrance about the thunderous Esper.
- Advance through Mt. Thunderclap until the story sends you toward the Dwarven Forge.
- At the sign on that route, head east back toward Mt. Thunderclap. Follow the path past a save point to the stone marker.
- Interact with it, complete Ramuh's exchange and win the trial.
The dialogue answer is not a pass-or-fail lock on the summon in the supplied route guide. Do not restart the chapter because you chose a different response.

Carbuncle's three Ruby Fragments
Carbuncle's unlock is a collection puzzle rather than a trial fight against Carbuncle. At the start of Chapter 3, find Ruby Cave northwest of the beach area near the Sanctum and read its stone marker.
| Fragment | Route from Olderion |
|---|---|
| Between the lakes | Head east, turn south at the sign, then search just west for the sparkling point between two lakes. |
| Along the eastern coast | Return to the sign and go east. Stay on the lower route instead of climbing toward the Cave of Waters; follow the coast north to the sparkling item. |
| Beyond the waterfalls | Go west from Olderion, cross the seven-waterfall area and the next bridge, then check the high ground. |
Return to the marker in Ruby Cave after collecting all three. You receive Carbuncle without needing to defeat it in a summon trial.
Titan needs the Gaia Hammer
Titan's early rumor leads to the desert east of Grandport Harbor, but the sealing stone cannot be dealt with immediately.
- Reach Zoldaad in Chapter 4 and read the bulletin board announcing the Grandshelt Colosseum's reopening.
- Return to the Colosseum and complete Fledgling Battle 5 to obtain the Gaia Hammer.
- Bring it to the sealed desert location east of Grandport Harbor.
- Break the seal and defeat Titan's trial to add the summon.

The Colosseum reward is the prerequisite. Simply bringing Lid or returning to the desert repeatedly does not replace acquiring the hammer.
Three more summons open in Chapter 5
Ifrit requires airship access
A researcher in Zoldaad's inn can tell you about the dwelling before you can reach it. Once Chapter 5 gives you airship access, fly to the volcano in Zoldaad, interact with it and enter the trial.
Ifrit is weak to Water and immune to Fire in the supplied trial data. Bring an appropriate source of Water damage rather than relying on an attack because it worked in the previous region. Win the fight to obtain Ifrit.
Leviathan comes from Nichol's Duty
Start Nichol's Duty in Olderion, speak with the other quest NPC there and follow the route to Lake Dorr. Continue to the world-map objective southeast of Olderion, deal with the sahagin and follow it to the Cave of Waters entrance. Return to Lake Dorr at the end of the chain for Leviathan.
Follow the quest objectives through the sahagin encounters rather than assuming that finding a summon's dwelling is the whole unlock. Complete the chain before checking the summon roster.
Shiva waits southwest of Mysidia
An NPC inside the Village of Sunioo's inn gives you the rumor. Explore the small island southwest of Mysidia and approach its ice whirlwind to be offered Shiva's duel. You can decline the offer, prepare and return.
Shiva is weak to Fire and absorbs Ice, so an Ice-heavy setup can work against you. Defeat the trial to obtain her.
Odin follows the Iron Splitter chain
The quest becomes available during Chapter 6 after the Research Center Ruins events, when you return to Gaberada and Fina gains the story ability to clear the miasma. This access matters: a marker on the far side of a blocked route is not an immediately available objective.
- Clear the miasma and travel east across the continent to the Bladerain Stele cave. Read its marker to begin Iron Splitter.
- Continue the main story through the Rugged Mountain Path until you wake in Duggle.
- Travel toward the Gronoa Shrine. At the signed crossroads, go south, then follow the miasma route north to the next marker.
- Complete the challenge there to receive the Broken Sword Blade.
- Return to the Nameless Ruins south of Mysidia. Use the second save-point location and enter the room to the north; speak with the NPC to finish the chain and obtain Odin.
Bahamut follows the Chapter 7 airship scene
Early in Chapter 7, an airship scene has the two Finas discuss hearing the Esper Lord of the Heavens. Speak with Evan when you are ready to follow that lead; accepting begins the encounter.
Bahamut applies ailments and debuffs, so recovery and protection are useful preparation alongside damage. The route guides recommend around level 50, but that is advice about readiness, not a separate unlock flag or a guarantee of victory.
Use the summon you have actually unlocked
Fina's Summon Esper command uses the acquired roster. An Esper remains for three turns, and only one can be on the field at a time. Unlocking a summon and deciding when to use it are separate choices.
Carbuncle's Reflect support, elemental summons and non-elemental options serve different needs. Match the next encounter rather than assuming the last Esper acquired replaces all previous ones. The Esper database lists the summons' individual effects; it is separate from the Vision equipment system.
